MOW WORKSHOP IN SINGAPORE

The first MOW workshop in Singapore was held on 21 April in the Oldham Theatre, National Archives of Singapore, which hosted the event coordinated by staff member Ms Lu Wenshi. Following some opening remarks by National Archives Director Mr Eric Chin, the workshop was led by Ms Joie Springer (Member of the IAC Register Subcommittee) and Dr Ray Edmondson (MOWCAP Special Advisor). It was attended by over 30 representatives of Singapore institutions, including the National Heritage Board, the National Library, the National Parks Board, the Asian Civilisations Museum and the Singapore Heritage Society. Thirty one participants from China, the DPR of Korea, Indonesia, Mongolia, the Solomon Islands, and Viet Nam took part in the workshop in Suzhou, China. The purpose was to give participants expert help in preparing nominations for inscription to the MOWCAP register. For more information see the UNESCO news item.

Taiwan held its first seminar on the Memory of the World Programme on 6-7 October 2014. There were local and international panelists. The international Memory of the World experts who spoke included Dr Roslyn Russell (Australia), Dato’ Habibah Zon Yahaya (Malaysia), Dr Helen Ieong (Macau,SAR) and Mr Aso Tatsuo (Japan).

The State Records and Archives Department of Vietnam acting as the standing agency for the National Committee for MOW in Vietnam will hold a seminar on “Strengthening National Identities through UNESCO Inscribed Documentary Heritage”. The seminar will focus on how to utilize the potential of documentary heritage in promoting the understanding of the culture and social life of a nation.

A Memory of the World workshop was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from 17 to 20 September. The workshop was organised by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO and co-hosted by the UNESCO National Commission of the Kyrgz Republic and the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea. Participants worked on submissions including a palm-leaf collection of folk literature, a genealogy in a dead language, a traveller’s diary from the 11th century and administrative records from the 1920s.
